Dookit Brewing celebrates its diverse local designers and photographers

23 February 2024

Glasgow-based Dookit Brewing makes small-batch beers using locally sourced ingredients while actively supporting and showcasing local designers and photographers.

Dookit is Scots for dovecote, a small building for pigeons or doves to live in, with many found in Glasgow. The name is a homage to the brewery's connection to the area, with a nod to its modest origins in 2020 as a cuckoo brewery. Since then, production has expanded to a dedicated site, with dreams of opening a taproom in Glasgow’s vibrant Southside.

Leading the way, illustrator and pattern designer Hazel Dunn crafted a bold Dookit Brewing brand identity and unique bottle label design featuring eye-catching colours. The label design acts as a template to showcase a different local artist on each beer release, with Hazel’s inspiring illustration adorning the brewery’s first brew.

Hazel's design for the blackcurrant sour ale Treat Yo Self unfolds with a playful and textured illustration, brought to life with a vibrant and balanced colour palette. This beer has since become a staple in the brewery's creative lineup.

Southside Pale, the enduring tropical favourite, highlights a unique abstract composition by artist Fran Gordan @frangordon_. Fran’s creativity reemerges in No Work Today!, an Export Stout with oyster shells from Gigha and Loch Fyne. Fran's distinctly conceptual label ensures a visually artistic expression that complements the beer’s bold flavour.

Basant, a 6.2% passionfruit and tamarind sour ale, showcases a vibrant design by artist Saskia Jae Singer. The artwork’s dynamic burst of colours and energy perfectly complements the tropical punch of the beer within.

Frances Scott employs her expert framing skills to deliver a breathtaking shot of the coastline for Mo Flo Mild. The result is a captivating combination that merges the characterful essence of Glasgow mild ale with the enchanting ruggedness of an Orkney seascape.

Dookit Brewing also has a stylish clothing range which includes embroidered caps, vibrant shirts and cosy beanies. The cap, designed by Onion Bags Skateboards, features a charming doo flying off with a pint, expertly embroidered by Bar One Clothing.

Additionally, designer KT McCrossan presents a playfully retrospective print T-shirt design that celebrates all featured artwork from the brewery’s first year. The ultra-snug beanies, embroidered by Wild & Kind in Glasgow, are made-to-order using 95% certified organic cotton, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

Dookit Brewing continues to expand its core beers and exclusive specials while championing exceptional visual creativity. Explore the full spectrum of brews and designs on the brewery's webpage and social media @dookitbrewing. Cheers!
